Standing against a backdrop of majestic fells and surrounded by four acres of pristine gardens, The Keswick Country House Hotel is one of the most impressive places to stay in Keswick. Its Victorian grandeur commands your attention from the moment you arrive along the meandering driveway. The Keswick Country House Hotel history dates back to 1869 when it was originally built to serve the Cockermouth, Keswick & Penrith Railway.

This is one of the few hotels in Keswick with parking and there are plenty of spaces to accommodate guests. Being just a short walk from the town centre of Keswick, this is ideal as it means you can leave your car here while you go off and explore.
As I walked through the wooden revolving door to the main reception, I was swept into a romantic era where wood panelled walls mingle with Lakeland inspired artwork. After being greeted with a warm welcome, I headed straight to my room so I could settle in and start exploring the building and grounds.
Keswick Accommodation – A Room with a View

I wasn’t quite prepared for what I witnessed when I entered my room. The view from the window quite literally took my breath away. From mighty Great Wood looming over the market town on the left to the dramatic peaks of the Northwestern Fells on the right, I was in complete awe.
Not to be outdone by the view I’d just encountered, the Junior Suite vied for my attention. As well as boasting the comfiest oversized bed, the finer details were also impressive…handmade chocolates, bathrobe and slippers, plump cushions and luxury toiletries all got my seal of approval.

Keswick Country House Hotel and Gardens
After a challenging hike up Latrigg and Skiddaw in the morning, my next port of call after check-in was a refreshing drink in the garden. The sun was beating down as I sat and watched wild rabbits frolicking on the lawn. It’s such a tranquil spot for relaxing and while I could have sat there for the rest of the afternoon, I wandered along the pretty garden walkways and soaked up the fell views. I’m not sure there are any other Keswick hotels that can upstage this impressive setting.

The Lounge and Bar
There’s an air of elegance that flows throughout the hotel and a warren of side rooms leading off from the bar provide peaceful spaces for enjoying an aperitif or nightcap. Imagine stylish armchairs, huge sash windows and cosy reading nooks.

The Lonsdale Restaurant
With wood panelling, lofty ceilings and original sash windows framing views of the garden, the Lonsdale Restaurant is an elegant space for dining. The Keswick Country House hotel menu showcases the best local produce with its choice of tantalising dishes created from fresh and artisanal ingredients.

To whet my appetite, I started with the chargrilled halloumi salad on layers of cucumber, cherry tomatoes and candied pecan nuts, drizzled with a zingy balsamic dressing. The main event of my dining experience was the crispy pork belly with black pudding bon bon, cheddar dauphinoise potatoes, asparagus, apple sauce and pan gravy. Everything was cooked to perfection and the service was attentive yet discreet.

The Cumbrian breakfast the following morning was equally as impressive, with a bountiful choice of cereals, fresh fruit and pastries and locally sourced cooked produce.
If you’re wondering where to eat in Keswick and wanting a top-class dining experience, the restaurant at the Keswick Country Hotel is well worth a visit.
