Lumb Falls

If you’re looking for an idyllic escape where you can unwind and hit the reset button, this Lumb Falls walk hits all the right spots. Tucked away in a beautiful woodland setting on Crimsworth Dean Beck, a tributary of the River Calder, this series of hidden waterfalls has a calming effect and lets you reconnect with nature. But the best thing is, it’s only a short walk from the nearest parking place. Old Road is very narrow and there’s a small parking space on the side of the road just next to the path that leads down to the waterfalls. Alternatively, park along Keighley Road (A6033) near Pecket Well.

  1. From the parking spot, follow the public bridleway that is signposted Lumb Falls. The path is narrow and runs alongside a drystone wall that leads you down large stones. You’ll need to watch your footing as it’s very uneven and there are some steeper steps to navigate. I’d recommend wearing long trousers for the walk down as the path is quite overgrown and there are lots of nettles.

2. Take a moment to soak in the beautiful Yorkshire scenery, with patchwork fields on your left, where you may see sheep grazing and a lush hillside in front of you.

3. At the bottom of the narrow trails, to your right, you’ll come to a smaller waterfall that trickles down some mossy stones.

5. From here, you have a much better view of the waterfalls, and you can climb down the rocks to access the pool below the falls for a wild swim. It is a bit of a tricky clamber down and isn’t recommended after rainfall due to slippery rocks.

6. If you don’t fancy risking the climb down, there are several spots above the waterfalls where you can sit and take in the pretty woodland setting.

7. To return to your car, simply follow the same path you came along.

Lumb Falls from Hebden Bridge Walk

If you prefer a longer walk, head out from the bohemian town of Hebden Bridge for this waterfall walk and pick up the well-marked footpaths that lead you along Hardcastle Crags valley. The initial stages of the walk are an invitation to slow down, to breathe in the crisp, clean air, and to let the urban hum fade into the background.

Hardcastle Crags is a National Trust-managed estate in an ancient woodland valley, home to a dramatic landscape and the impressive Gibson Mill. Walk along the tranquil riverbanks, discover hidden nooks or simply sit and absorb the surrounding natural scenery.

For alternative, shorter walks to Lumb Falls, either park along the A6033, between the junction of Old Road and Pecket Well, or head for the National Trust car park near Hardcastle Crags.
