Whenever I’m in need of a peaceful escape to reset and recharge, my mind immediately thinks of the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. For years, I’ve been visiting Stonethwaite Farm and Campsite and uncovering its hidden gems, which have since become my go-to spots in the Lake District.

Embraced by the wild beauty of Borrowdale, Stonethwaite Campsite is a scenic gateway to the fells, woodlands and secluded pools, which lie beneath the gaze of dramatic peaks. I’ve always found that there is something deeply restorative about waking up to the sights and sounds of nature, and unzipping your tent to be greeted by the resident Herdwicks is just magical.
The Heart of Stonethwaite Farm
just moments from the village of Rosthwaite, Stonethwaite Farm is a traditional Lakeland farm. Recently welcoming John and Emma and their three sons as the new tenants, Stonethwaite Farm and Campsite is going back to its roots. With John mainly taking care of the animals and Emma looking after the campsite and bookings, they have thrown their heart and soul into creating a friendly and tranquil environment where families and outdoor lovers can be at one with nature.

This isn’t just a place to pitch a tent, it’s a living, breathing part of the Cumbrian landscape where Belted Galloways – a breed native to the fells and the only ones of their kind in Borrowdale – and Herdwick sheep graze and the seasons dictate the pace of life. The natural environment here is to be respected by anyone who wants to learn about traditional farming and explore the Langstrath Valley.
Back to Basics
The campsite is flanked by towering crags and the gentle babble of Stonethwaite Beck and being a working farm campsite, the atmosphere is authentic and nature focused. You won’t find a rowdy clubhouse here (thank goodness), instead, you get to watch the morning mist clinging to the fells while you hug your mug of coffee.

I much prefer this kind of Lake District camping, where everything is about simplicity and enjoying the great outdoors without the noise. There are several pitches spread along the riverside and in a more sheltered wooded area, offering some of the most spectacular fell views.
Stonethwaite Campsite Facilities

In terms of facilities, the site provides clean toilets, cold water and a washing up-area. A more recent addition, and one that campers of the furry variety will appreciate, is the Dog Run, designed to give dogs plenty of exercise off the lead. As the area is occupied by sheep and cattle, owners are advised to always keep their dogs on the lead outside of the run.

While you’re allowed to bring your own BBQ, firepits must be hired from the farm, and include a heat mat, logs, kindling, firelighters and a gauze lid.

Walks in Borrowdale and Stonethwaite
One of the many draws of Stonethwaite Farm and Campsite is the immediate access to some of the most picturesque Borrowdale walks. You don’t even need to get in your car. Whether you’re a wild swimmer wanting a dip in the nearby Fairy Glen and Black Moss Pot, or a keen fell walker looking to bag some peaks, there are endless walks from the campsite.

You can head up Eagle Crag or Great Crag for commanding views over the fells or follow the Cumbria Way through the valley. Wherever you decide to explore, please respect the area and follow the Countryside Code by taking all your litter home and leaving no trace.
Places to Visit Near Stonethwaite
While it’s so tempting to never leave the valley, there are some wonderful places to visit just a short drive or bus ride away. The vibrant market town of Keswick is only about six miles away if you want to pick up some supplies, visit the local shops or enjoy a meal at a pub or restaurant. (Speaking of pubs, a visit to the Langstrath Country Inn, which is just a stone’s throw from Stonethwaite Farm, is a must for a hearty meal and a local ale.)

If you head towards the shores of Derwentwater, you can take a boat ride on the Keswick Launch, enjoy a picnic on the lakeside or have a game of crazy golf in Hope Park.

Bookings must be made to reserve a pitch at Stonethwaite campsite via the website. For more information you can contact Emma at the email address above.
