A Grasmere Hotel Full of History

Dating back to 1650 when it was originally built as a coaching Inn, The Swan at Grasmere is one of the oldest inns in the Lake District. Its warm welcome was such that the inn was referred to by poet William Wordsworth in his poem “The Waggoner”, and still to this day all who visit here “leave it with a jovial heart”.

Wrapped inside dramatic fell scenery, The Swan is one of the most-loved hotels in Grasmere and boasts a backdrop that other inns could only ever dream of. What makes the inn more attractive to guests, is that although the main attractions of Grasmere are just moments away, you can escape the hustle and bustle of the village centre. After spending the day munching on gingerbread, climbing the iconic Helm Crag or visiting Dove Cottage where Wordsworth once lived, you know you can return to the loving arms (or wings) of The Swan.

The cosy bar and contemporary dining room offer laid-back spaces for sampling the homecooked food that has earned itself a bit of a reputation with foodies from all over the country. And when the sun is shining, you can dine outside and soak up the fell views. All washed down with a good old local ale or a glass of fizz, of course.

Fortunately, there are rooms at the inn, so you can linger longer and let the comfy beds nurse your head! If you love to wake to a stunning view in the morning, head for the Executive or Feature rooms.
